How to Measure a Wall for Tiles

Measure wall width and height, subtract untiled openings, then use the net area for tile quantity.

Wall area

Gross wall area = width × height
Net tile area = gross area − openings

Measure each wall separately. For repeated identical walls, calculate one wall and multiply by quantity.

Subtract an opening only if it will not be tiled. Keep opening dimensions separate so the net-area calculation is easy to check.
