How Much Gravel Do I Need?
Measure the project area, choose the finished depth, calculate volume, then add a project-specific allowance. If you need a weight estimate, multiply the adjusted volume by a supplier density.
Basic method
Volume = area × depth. Keep units consistent before multiplying. For rectangular areas, area = length × width. Split irregular projects into smaller rectangles and add them.
Volume is not the same as weight
Gravel density varies by stone type, grading, moisture and compaction, so use a supplier value where possible.
Waste and compaction
Do not assume one universal percentage. Ground condition, compaction, edging, delivery losses and irregular shapes can change the amount required.
